S-PAC-1 for lymphoma PDF Print E-mail

Researchers have identified a new target for the treatment of lymphoma and are testing a potential new drug in pet dogs afflicted with the disease. At low doses, the compound, called S-PAC-1, arrested the growth of tumors in three of six dogs tested and induced partial remission in a fourth.
The results of the study appear this month in the journal Cancer Research.

There is an association between taking statins (lipid lowering drugs), and reduced risk of developing the chronic inflammatory disease, rheumatoid arthritis. These are the findings of a study published in this week's PLoS Medicine.

Patients with colon cancer who used multivitamins during and after being treated with post-surgical chemotherapy did not reduce the risk of the cancer returning or their dying from it.
The findings are reported online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and later will be published in a print edition.

Ceftaroline fosamil for community acquired bacterial pneumonia and complicated skin and skin structure infections PDF Print E-mail

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Anti-Infective Drugs Advisory Committee voted 21 - 0 in favor of approval of ceftaroline fosamil for the treatment of community acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) and voted 18 - 0in favor of approval for complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI).
Ceftaroline is a novel, bactericidal, injectable, broad-spectrum cephalosporin being developed as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of cSSSI and CAP, which include resistant gram-positive pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and S. pneumoniae (as well as common gram-negative organisms).

Long-term weight loss may release into the blood industrial pollutants called persistent organic pollutants (POPs) linked to illnesses like diabetes, hypertension and rheumatoid arthritis, researchers said on Tuesday.

A pilot study suggests the hallucinogen psilocybin may be feasible and safe to administer to patients with advanced-stage cancer and anxiety, with promising effects on mood, according to a report published online today that will appear in the January 2011 print issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
